Asian Leopard Cats

We thought you might like to hear more about our two Asian Leopard Cats, and so they now have their own page.

Our Asian Leopard Cats

Gucci and Tia are a breeding pair, and I am honoured that Neal Holt has entrusted their care to us.

These photos were taken early June 2011. Gucci on the left and sweet little Tia on the right. I was surprised at how different they are in size. Gucci is at least half again bigger than Tia, who is such a dainty little girl. Gucci is much taller and slimmer, but all muscle!

As expected, it has taken Gucci and Tia a few months to settle down with us. They were very timid at first, and only came out after dark, but as time goes by they are coming out more, and Gucci now spends all of the day out in the run. Gucci is always interested in what we are doing and now lets Andrew stroke his nose (through the mesh!).

Tia is more shy, and always disappears into her kittening box if we have visitors, but she is also now getting more bold, and can often be seen basking in the sunshine. She no longer disappears when I approach the pen.

Our coffee breaks have now changed and become more frequent. We have bought a couple of garden seats, so we can sit drinking our coffee next to their pen (in rain or shine) and spend time watching them. They are so amazing, so graceful, so beautiful to look at, and a joy to be near.

They have ramps and several shelves at different levels, and a tree branch suspended in their pen, and they enjoy watching the world from up high.

Gucci is particularly fascinated by Summer, who goes and says 'hello' to him every day. He also loves playing with a tennis ball, though they do get ripped to shreds fairly quickly, so they have to be changed fairly regularly. He has ignored his football, but likes the cat tunnel that is in his pen. We are hoping to get a new cat wheel for them soon, and hope to extend their run so that have an area with some shrubs and water in it. Unfortunately they use water as their 'litter tray' so a pond is not suitable. Planning how to do the water is proving more difficult than we expected, but we hope to give them a waterfall and some water to play in.

If you are considering getting Asian Leopard Cats, we are happy to hear from you, and to help with advice on getting a Dangerous Wild Animals Licence, and the care of the cats. We are still novices ourselves, but are learning fast, and are so very thankful to other ALC owners who have helped us.

Neal, Jacky and Roseanne - thank you so much for your advice.
