Our Pets
As well as our Bengals, we also have 3 ‘moggies’
who came to us by various means.
I have been a Tolkein fan since I first read The
Hobbit. I was part way through that
book when a good friend of mine, helping me through a ‘bad patch’, gave me
a dear little black kitten that I called Gollum.
Unfortunately Gollum died a few years ago.
Naming my pet cats after characters from The
Hobbit and Lord of the Rings is now traditional for me.

Gimli
Gimli was given to me by a good
friend.
She was a full sister to Gollum, but just one
year younger, and she missed Gollum dreadfully when he died (which was why
we got Smeagol).
Gimli is now 17 years old, and getting frail. She doesn’t like mixing with the other
cats, and prefers to stay in the peace and quiet in my office.
Gimli’s favourite occupation these days, is to
sleep.

Smeagol
Smeagol is a rescue cat. She has always been a bit strange – so
ungainly and clumsy, which is so un-cat-like.
She doesn’t have any problems with her sight, but
I often wonder whether she had an accident or was mistreated before she
came to us, and it has affected her sense of balance.
She mothers all the other cats in the house, and
is the protector of our house and family (cats and people). Smeagol stands guard duty in the garden,
and ensures no visiting cats get too close.
And she immediately goes to investigate, with a very ‘worried’ look
on her face, if she thinks any of our cats or kittens are distressed.

Gandalf
I’ve had several white cats in the past,
and so wanted another – then we heard about this litter of white kittens in
Chesterfield.
So Gandalf joined us.
His mum was a British Shorthair Tabby, and dad
was a white shorthair (probably part British Shorthair).
Gandalf’s problem is his weight, and my lack of
discipline.
Every time I tried to put him on a diet, he would
look at me with such sad eyes, and give me the ‘silent meow’ – completely
irresistable. But I have now found a
food that helps him lose weight, that he really likes, and he has slimmed
down a bit since this picture was taken.
Gandalf loves company. He is not a lap cat – but loves to sit
really close, and leaning against you, or sleeping at the bottom of the
bed. He is a sweetie – a gentle
giant.
